So the people who have played the first game will know a bit about what is going on already. You'll need to interact with plenty of new and interesting machines and devices on your way to rescuing the scientist that was responsible for the whole bleeding mess in the first place.Īs I said, the story parallels the original Half-Life. Sure there's going to be plenty of opportunity to waste some creeps before the day is done, but that won't be the only thing to worry about. Much of the game will revolve around interacting with NPCs as well as figuring a way around environmental problems. In fact, for a good part of the game, he will be putting his head together with some of the scientists in the game to figure a way out.

His primary responsibility will be to get the scientists out of the facility alive and well. It isn't your place to go around trying to commit genocide on each of the alien species. While it's true that good 'ol Barney's story in Black Mesa will take place at the same time and place of Gordon's, the mechanics and objectives will be a bit different than the first game.

So all in all, Blue Shift will weigh in around a third of the size of the original game. But the fact that it was being bundled with the original Half-Life for the Dreamcast also means that, due to space, it needed to be much smaller than the other expansions. Another 27 levels of one of the best games ever aren't bad no matter where they came from. Almost seems sacrilegious doesn't it? But whatever, at least it's more Half-Life so stop complaining.

Blue Shift is definitely coming to the PC as a port from the Dreamcast. Any way you look at it, you'll still come out with action and adventure as you take control of good 'ol Barney and see sections Black Mesa that even Gordon didn't have clearance for.īlue Shift was originally designed to be an exclusive release for the Dreamcast version of Half-Life, but we're assuming that whatever drug Sierra was on has finally worn off. And probably an even bigger slice of insanity for not trying to get the hell out of Black Mesa when creepy little face huggers started eating his friends. Well as it turns out, Barney isn't just a security guard, he's a security guard with a little slice of honor and a big slice of courage. You may or may not know this, but one of them was named Barney. In the original game, gamers took control of one of the scientists on the experiment and were charged with ridding the facility of the alien presence before it could spread to other areas.ĭuring the course of that game, you ran into a bunch of security guards. And that one experiment went horribly wrong springing extra-dimensional beasties out into the facilities to suck people's brains out, eat their faces, and generally be as creepy as possible. There were some crazy experiments going on down in the depths of the research center, one of which is the focus of the Half-Life franchise. It's way out there in the desert and has security up the wazoo making the White House secret service look like the fat security guard at K-Mart. Basically, there's this research facility called Black Mesa. For those of you that don't know the background of Half-Life, here's a small synopsis.
